My Candidate Can Piss Rainbows and Shit M&M's

Pissing Rainbows and Shitting M&M's

An ever increasing number of you act as if "your" candidate could piss a rainbow and shit M&M’s. Some of you blow sunshine up the candidates asses so much that it becomes harder and harder to distinguish where politics ends and religion begins. If that wasn’t bad enough, some of you proudly declare that if "your" candidate doesn’t win the nomination, you won’t even bother to vote for the one that does. It’s people like this that don’t need to be in politics at all. For them, none of this is about electing someone to public office. It’s about finding someone that they can follow to make their lives feel worthwhile. It’s sickening, weak, and pathetic

Hillary

This is all too apparent in discussions about Hillary. There has not been a day in months that I have not seen someone arguing that she is just as bad as Bush, or in some way not qualified to be President. I don’t care if she if she has the intelligence of a walnut, hates abortion rights, and spits on union workers as she passes by. I’ll still vote for her if she wins the nomination.

The rationale these people give for saying that they won’t vote if their candidate doesn’t win is that they will only vote for "real" Democrats. The problem with government is, after all, too many people not voting for the "real" Democrat. But what the hell is a "real" Democrat anyway? My guess is that it’s my candidate because my candidate can piss a rainbow and shit M&M’s.

Some people just refuse to accept the long view, and instead think that their candidate will solve all the problems. They look at those that talk about a ten year or a twenty year strategy as naïve. To these I say, get ready to be let down again because whoever wins the nomination, and the general election, will not deliver your promised land.

Leadership

I cringe every time I hear one of you blowhards talk about how your candidate is a leader, or is somehow capable of leading this nation. What ever happened to a "government by the people for the people?" Since when do we think the people we hire to work for us are our leaders? They don’t lead me. The people are the leaders. But each one of the current candidates has rambled on and on about why they can lead best. Horseshit and bubblegum.

How To Select Candidates

I’ll share my tried and true method for choosing who I’ll vote for in the primaries. I talk to the campaign staff. I email them. If I get a thoughtful reply, that tells me something about that candidate that is important to me. It tells me that I matter for more than just my donation. But with the top three this cycle, I’ve got nothing but form letter responses with links to their money page. And people wonder why some of us don’t get behind candidates this cycle.

If I were to come out in favor of any particular candidate, you wouldn’t know it because I would be asking them every hard question and wouldn’t give them any peace. I would appear the critic at every point because I want to know how my candidate reacts under pressure. I want to know how my candidate reacts to me as an individual. They’re going to work for my primary vote, damnit. But look at some of you. You don’t ask questions, you just accept the sunshine inflated bullshit you are spoon fed from professionals hired to keep you in line. It’s sickening.

Change

The change we all desire will never happen from the federal level. All politics is local, and that’s an overused phrase that holds more truth than some of you imagine. Until each of us understands that being involved in our own communities, and electing Democrats to every place in it, we will continue this process of bitching about shit we could change, but won’t. And that is why we shouldn’t give more than two shits about who we elect to hold the presidency. Change happens when people demand it, and people are local. You want to change the country, change your local community and it will happen.

Electing Democrats

In the meantime, we need to elect Democrats. Any will do because no matter how good or how bad we think they are, they are historically more open minded and willing to entertain differing perspectives. Republicans are all about keeping everything the same, and the same don’t work anymore. That’s the real reason we need to vote for anyone that claims the name of our party. I don’t care if it’s Clinton, Edwards, Obama, or Daffy Fucking Duck. Any Democrat is better than the best Republican.

There will be plenty of time to weed out the riff raff from our party. There will be many more primary challenges. There will be unfettered criticism of elected and non-performing Democrats. But we will be much better off making those changes from the position of a veto-proof congressional majority and a President claiming the name of Democrat.

Some of the best and brightest among us have written thousands of pages talking about how we need to see all of this as something that will come in ten years or twenty years. Some of you just won’t listen, and you want the hoped for Promised Land right now. I want it right now too, damnit, but anything worthwhile is going to take time and unwavering effort to make into a reality. If you’re not willing to see the forest through the trees, then please get the fuck off of the internet that Al Gore created just for me.

Peace.
